The packing list... a challenge to overcome!

I have never been quite able to travel "light". I would even say that without my big big bag and additional hand luggage I am at a loss. So this travel starts with a challenge: how to pack my life in about 12 kilos for over three weeks.

The good thing is that I'll have a break of two days in Windhoek between the southern and northern parts of the trip... and I'll have to take advantage of that respite to plan some washing up! This will allow for a lighter pack, at least as far as clothing is concerned.

So, the packing list is split, as usual, in three parts:

  1. Clothes and footwear:
    • 2 light mixed shorts/pants
    • 1 normal trousers
    • 3 t-shirts
    • 2 long sleeve shirts
    • winter pajamas + night socks (it's freezing at nights)
    • scarf / pareo and gloves (for chilly evenings)
    • 1 sun hat / cap
    • 1 polartek / jumper
    • watertight / windbreaking jacket
    • underwear and socks
    • swimsuit / pareo
    • trail shoes (no space for hiking boots)
    • comfortable sandals (city walks)
    • flip-flops / keen shoes (swimming pool / shower)
  2. Pharmacy and hygiene:
    • bath / swim towel
    • silk sleeping bag / pillow case
    • soap / shampoo / shower gel / toothpaste
    • sunscreen / lipbalm / moisturizing cream / biafine
    • tissues / toilet paper / lighter
    • first aid kit / bruises / blisters (aspirin, Imodium, antiseptic cream and antihistamine cream)
    • eye drops doses / antiallergic pills
    • antibiotics / antidiarrhea / other / prescription
    • hairbrush / toothbrush / tweezers / nail clippers / cisors / safety pins / picnic cutlery set
    • sanitary protection
    • wet wipes / anti-bacteria cleanser / personal toiletries
    • insect repellent
    • ear plugs / eye shades
  3. Miscellaneous:
    • neck collar for the plane & pillow
    • sunglasses / normal glasses
    • binoculars
    • camera / memory card / batteries / cleaning kit / dust/waterproof bag
    • netbook / socket adaptor / charger
    • travel guide / map
    • other book (Sheltering Desert?)
    • torch light / head light
    • passport / driving license / vaccination book
    • insurance details / credit card
    • flight and trip vouchers
    • soft water bottles / plastic containers
    • plastic bin bag / ziploc pouches for sand
    • notebook / pencil
    • ptwo feet pad (decathlon)
As luggage, Decathlon Trek 70-liter bag should do with even some extra space, adding my hiking rucksack as day pack holding water containers and dealing as hand luggage for the travel. Include the MOA bag as "city" bag.

Other alternatives: watertight bag (used for diving) to store the camera and other fragile gear; small kayak backpack to hold the water soft container during short hikes.

Find a safety belt to store papers and money away.
